Individual Therapy

Therapy seems like a luxury for other people.

You really don’t have time or space for you to slow things down, take stock, fix your feelings, and plan your next move.

It’s all too much…

You can’t afford the investment in yourself, when you have so much to do for others.

Right?

No, WRONG.

Therapy is like rest.

Sure, you can sort of function – just about – alright without it.

But you’d do so much better with it.

You repair, replenish, and ready yourself for life in therapy…

… without feeling s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d like you feel right now.

You create your new self in therapy.

And, if you do it with a top expert with the best tools available, so that you can adjust your treatment along the way (unlike most other places), you really EXCEL.

Feeling and doing better.

Being who you want to be.

Having time again.

You deserve to give to yourself…

… to cultivate and replenish who you are, so that you are a resource for all those people who depend on you.

No one ever made me feel so heard before.

Client J. L.

So what makes us different? What can we do for you?

We offer a Customized Approach.

Every other therapist talks about various levels of deep, deep (deep!) training (“Zzzzz”), but we’re a little different.

We’re deeply (deeply!) trained, too – but we also supervise each other.

You’ll get many brains working on your problem, not just the one (deeply trained!) brain of your therapist.

My life is different. You gave me tools I didn’t have before.

— Client J. B.

Here are the different approaches those many brains have deep (deeeeeeep!) training in.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT)

Several staff have training in this model, which proposes that the way we think influences the way we feel and act, so if you change the thinking you can change the feeling and outcomes.

Dr. Shipon’s supervision in this is based in the fact that he had to write a paper for the psychology examiner’s board based on CBT, and then defend that paper in person before the board, before he could become licensed as a psychologist. (That was the old way they did things. Now things are less terrifying. He also walked uphill, in the snow, both ways to and from school).

This is my safe space.

— Client R. D.

DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY (DBT)

An intense therapy which proposes that people with big feelings often find themselves in crappy situations that we politely call invalidating environments.

The methods DBT proposes for dealing with this include:

  • staying present-focused
  • being non-judgmental of self and others (hard!)
  • regulating feelings
  • knowing what to do when things are already bad
  • learning how to negotiate relationships with others

All this while learning a life philosophy that avoids extremes by aiming toward a balanced view of any situation.

This is very powerful stuff, especially with the group skills training every week, and individual therapy in the same week. Depending on your needs, the schedule can be modified. Several staff are intensively trained.

I’m much better now. I am reflective. I think first, then speak. Through DBT, I also discovered that when I rest and socialize, I am better. I drink less often.

— Client J. A.

HOLISTIC WELLNESS

So you know that dietary plan, or breathing technique, or yoga asana, or ancient healing practice that you heard about?

We know it too, or something like it.

Using our team approach, many of us can advise on several of these topic areas. We also have holistic health authors in our midst, energy workers, and our incredible wellness coordinator to talk to you about all of these things.

I like this place, because it has a holistic center feel to it. One stop shopping.
It’s not just therapy, it’s everything.

Client L. K.

Knowing if you’re better is important.

And this awareness is missing from most therapy.

Most therapy practices depend on you telling the clinician if you’re feeling better, to know if therapy is going well or if the work is done.

There are a couple of problems with that, not the least of which is that you might not know how to tell your therapist it’s done. Some clients just feel too bad about it.

So, is there another way?

Sure. A device like the thing on the turkey that pops up when it’s done cooking, right?

Well, not quite like that. They’re hard to install in people.

We can measure your progress.

Yes, therapy progress can be measured, and…

Yes, we’re committed to doing this with you.

We use the Treatment Outcome Package, the most sophisticated tool in the world for this. Your results are compared to 1.3 million other people, representative of the U.S. population.

Our commitment to you is to show you your results, like almost no other practice can or does.

Here are some things we can do:

BEHAVIOR THERAPY: Sometimes life requires an actual scientific analysis of how a problem starts, what happens, and how it keeps happening. Several of our staff have training and experience in functional behavior analysis, and can apply its principles to your situation. A solid examination of events, called a “chain analysis” in psychobabble, can generate a lot of insight into how something keeps happening, and then a strategy can be developed to improve the situation

CLINICAL HYPNOSIS: This is the great-grandfather of rapid-change techniques, sometimes requiring just one session to make a big life change. This is one of the best ways to change your mindset and performance in difficult situations. By relaxing, focusing, and bringing the positive things from your past into the present to work on your problem, you can improve your life in one to three sessions of clinical hypnosis — and contrary to many people’s beliefs, all while remaining completely awake and in control of the process. Dr. Shipon is a master practitioner and trainer of clinical hypnosis in the Ericksonian model, and has developed his own method based on his other competencies.

My assessment of you? I found you to be very professional, knowledgeable, and empathic, kind and humorous. Your timely and invaluable help has been much appreciated not only by me, but by my husband and my entire family. Thank you, and may all the good you do get back to you, your family, and all under your care, greatly multiplied.
