Frequently Asqued (looks fancier) Questions (FAQ)

Where is your office located?
Our main office is at

420 BoulevardSuite 208Mountain Lakes, NJ 07046

We are upstairs, all the way down the hall to the left, in the back of the building when you come in.

Across from the PNC Bank?
Yeah.
Oh! The building attached to the tennis courts?
Yeah.
Are they still open?
No, Arnie sold the building and the new guys don’t know what to do with the courts yet.
Yeah? How are the new owners?
Really nice.
Didn’t there used to be an MRI Center there?
Two, actually. They both closed. Now the lights don’t flicker. But we really LOVE our NICE DENTIST next door, Dr. Soufnati, and all her staff!

What are your hours?
We see clients Monday through Friday during normal business hours and evenings as necessary. Our hours depend on the scheduling needs of our clients. To maintain work-life balance, we try not to work on weekends.
How long are sessions?
45-50 minutes, on the hour, so we have time to write notes and go to the bathroom.
How much do you charge?
$200 per session. We can also make sessions less expensive by offering subscription packages for four sessions a month at $600. That is a flat, non-refundable fee due at the beginning of the month, but can be turned on or off for months you may be away.
Why so much?
Our price is actually very competitive with other clinicians in the area. You’re catching us before we raise them, as we haven’t done that since 2012.
Will my rate stay the same if I schedule now?

Yes, as a matter of law now, due to the No Surprises Act.

Do you take insurance?
Just Medicare and Medicaid, again, for now, until it becomes too cumbersome. It’s already headed that way.
Why don’t you take more insurance?
We were spending more time dealing with the many different insurance companies and their different rules, and not focusing enough on improving our services to the public.

We started to really hate that. We became clinicians to treat people and have the most advanced treatments, not to play games with moneys.

Plumbers charge a fee and get paid.

Mechanics charge a fee and get paid.

Usually they’re not saving or changing lives.

We save and change lives every day. We deserve our fee too, and usually it’s less than the plumber and the mechanic charges.

How has freeing up your time helped you improve services?
We now offer the highest quality services available, including inter-supervision of all staff, and outcome assessment of therapy. Most practices don’t offer these.

Plus, we believe that you get out of therapy what you get into it. If you’re operating under the illusion someone else is paying for it, you won’t be as committed to changing your life quickly.

We see faster results this way. So do our clients.

How do I set up an initial appointment?
Call our on-call person at (973) 321-4380 x0. Either our assistant or clinical director will get back to you.
What is your cancellation policy?
For individual appointments, you must give us 48 hours’ notice of an appointment change or risk a $100 cancellation fee. The reason is that we hold an entire hour open for you.

For monthly subscription appointments, if you miss your time, you forfeit that appointment. The cancellation fee, and not making up the session, is rolled into the reduced fee.

Late cancellations are not reimbursable by your insurance, by the way, if you’re sending them the bill.

What age ranges do you work with?
Age 8 and up. Most of us work with late teens on up, but at least four of us are experienced and comfortable working with kids.
What do you actually do in sessions with your clients?
So, first, we talk about what is going on. Usually by the first session, we’ve already measured how you’re doing in several areas of therapeutic concern using the Treatment Outcome Package (TOP), the most advanced tool for getting a picture of how you’re doing in the world.

If, instead, that isn’t done, we might do that in the first or second session. Then, after your session, we consult with each other on the things that you’re looking to accomplish, and develop a strategy to help you. We implement this strategy over several sessions.

Is there homework between sessions?
You’re darn tootin’. Well, maybe. It depends on what you’re working on. Assume yes, so you’re not surprised.
What modalities do you use?
Jackpot. Several of us have had several different kinds of training, so we’re trained in many different approaches.

We have a lot of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) going on, which offers structured skills for dealing with really difficult life situations. Staff are continually training in DBT. This therapy proposes that when people with strong emotions find themselves in invalidating environments, problems occur. It emphasizes teaching clients skillful, balanced approaches to life, moving away from extremes of thought, feeling, and behavior. It also is a non-judgmental therapy, and teaches being non-judgmental as one of the many skills. Other skills include staying present, tolerating distress, regulating emotions, and improving relationships. We offer a skills training group for learning the skills, and individual work to process individual concerns. The optimal thing to do is to do both, every week.

We’ve got us some serious Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) background. That one proposes that an evaluation of the accuracy and usefulness of our thoughts, and making some adjustments, can help us feel better and do better.

Dr. Shipon is a master trainer of pattern interruption techniques because of his own deep levels of training and experience with neurolinguistic programming (NLP), Ericksonian clinical hypnosis, master trainer experience in Reiki, and other techniques. Many of the offerings through Inner Wellth are influenced by his work, which has ties to short-term trauma resolution techniques.

Other approaches include insight-oriented therapy, family therapy, and alcohol and substance abuse counseling (we have two people with special licenses in that: W. Shawn Welty and Jackie Matacchiera). We also have several therapists with training in behavioral approaches with children and people with disabilities.

How do I get the most out of therapy?
This one’s easy. Therapy is a “dose-response” effect. The more you “take,” the further you get over a shorter amount of time. Regular attendance, at least once a week, is the minimum dose to start to feel and do better, at least in the beginning.

Another tip is that therapy is not always comfortable. While we have a very likable, warm, and engaging staff, it’s in the discomfort that you’ll get the most out of your therapy. If you can discuss difficult or uncomfortable things about your therapy with your therapist, it will be so much easier to do that with others in your life. This will get you further, faster — therapy can be a training ground for doing that. Let us help you through that. What we can guarantee is that we will be supportive of you in that process.

Can you hypnotize me to quack like a duck or bark like a dog?
Yes. But we won’t.
What is clinical hypnosis?
Relaxed body, focused attention, and using the resource states you’ve gathered in the past during your best experiences to overcome problems in the present, and shape your future success.
Do you do “past life regressions?”
Decidedly not.

We have enough material to work with in this life, let alone all the other lives a person may have. Nope. Learned this one from our mentor Ron Klein. No, no. Nope.

What’s the tea that Dr. Shipon keeps pushing on clients?
Stash Double Bergamot Earl Grey. It’s available through Amazon.

Dr. Shipon watched all 178 episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and liked when Captain Picard said to the replicator, “Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.”

Do you teach Reiki classes?

Actually, we teach patients how to do Reiki on themselves, in a non-traditional adaptation of the technique by Dr. Shipon, who is trained teacher of it since 1999. His book Reiki Psychology is available on Kindle.

What’s the nearest good place to eat around here?
Paul’s Family Diner, right across Route 46, on the eastbound side after the gas station. If you leave the practice, turn right on Route 46, then take the first left turn and make a U-ey. Paul’s will be on the right after the liquor store and the gas station. Can’t miss it.
