Dr. Lisa Ilaria is a clinical psychologist with more than 12 years of experience conducting individual, couples and group psychotherapy. She has helped people work through depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, grief and loss, relationship problems, life-cycle transitions, end-of-life issues, and health-related concerns. She has training in both long-term and short-term therapy models, including clinical hypnosis, brief outcome-oriented psychotherapy, and mindfulness meditation.
Dr. Ilaria believes that there is a strong connection between emotional well-being and physical well-being and that creating balance in one's life is the path to wellness. She has observed that in today's busy world many people neglect to make time for self-care, which leaves them susceptible to stress and becoming overwhelmed by life's demands. Dr. Ilaria sees the process of psychotherapy as a way to make time for oneself, to step back and observe the patterns in one's life, to notice what is helpful and what is not, and to discover ways to make changes that bring relief from suffering and /or greater personal satisfaction.
Dr. Ilaria has worked in a variety of settings and understands the many different kinds of challenges people may be facing from their environmental stressors. Her practice areas have ranged across the adult lifespan, from working with emerging adults in college counseling to older adults in skilled nursing facilities. She has specialized training in working with trauma, particularly with survivors of sexual abuse. She has extensive experience working with older adults and their families in coping with the challenges brought on by aging and medical illness. She has been involved in leading groups that focused on developing skills to recover from addictive and compulsive behaviors.
Dr. Ilaria believes in tailoring her approach to the needs and wants of the person in front of her. Her primary goal is to provide an atmosphere of safety where clients can feel comfortable and where trust can be built. She has been trained in Psychodynamic and Brief Psychodynamic approaches, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness approaches, and Clinical Hypnotherapy. Dr. Ilaria will draw on this skill set to find an approach that works for you to get the most out of your psychotherapy consultations.
