I am delighted to have the opportunity to utilize empathetic intuition and my clinical training by providing a client-centered approach to counseling. This approach is both unique and highly effective in transforming one’s awareness of the options presented in life. Understanding how we process and organize our thoughts and behaviors, either by the choices we make or by the family we are born to, is how I aspire to help my clients.
I was born and raised in Brazil, in a city called Belo Horizonte, which translates to “Beautiful Horizon.” As with many third world countries, the beauty of Brazil comes with a lack of resources in many medical areas, including mental health. From an early age, I have seen first-hand what it means to have nothing and have worked closely with those who need to ask for everything. Having moved to the United States after completing high school, my goal was to achieve academic success in America. Although I cannot pinpoint the exact moment where my focus moved to psychology, working closely with individuals challenged by emotional crises inspired me in the most unexpected ways. Seeing first-hand the perseverance and courage of my clients who were facing life-changing events stirred my passion for this work.
I have more than eight years of experience working with adults, children, and families. In addition to a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Hunter College and a Master’s degree in clinical psychology from Teacher’s College at Columbia University, I also obtained a doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Adelphi University.
During my doctoral studies, I worked in multiple settings providing psychological services to diverse populations in both English and Spanish languages. My predoctoral internship was completed at New York City Children’s Center where I provided individual psychotherapy as well as co-facilitated a variety of skills training groups such as social skills and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) for children and adolescents.
My postdoctoral work was completed in a private setting providing individual, couples and families psychotherapy. My treatment approach is informed from a psychodynamic perspective, although I integrate a range of techniques including CBT, DBT and TF-CBT.
